Music Academy Overview

SCSHS Music Academy is to provide students in Years 7 to 9 only with meaningful opportunities to develop musical excellence, creativity, collaboration, leadership, and confidence through high-quality ensemble and performance experiences. 

The Music Academy aims to foster a strong sense of belonging and school pride by creating pathways for students to participate in contemporary bands, Rock bands, Instrumental Music ensembles, Jazz bands, orchestras, String quartets, Vocal groups (School Choir), and performance opportunities within the school and wider community. 

The Music Academy also seeks to support student wellbeing and engagement by connecting students with like-minded peers and providing authentic artistic experiences that align with the school vision of Believe, Belong, Become.

What does the Music Academy look like?

The Music Academy offers students in Years 7 to 9 only the chance to enrich their education in Music through specialised lessons on a Monday and Wednesday afternoon during period 4. Students involved in the Academy will develop advanced musical and performance skills by representing  the school positively through performances, competitions, workshops, and community events.

To remain enrolled in the Music Academy, students are required to:

  • Demonstrate an interest and commitment to music performance.

  • Participate in an audition, performance task, or skills demonstration.

  • Show positive behaviour and a willingness to represent the school appropriately.

  • Maintain 100% attendance and engagement in classes and events.

  • Demonstrate a commitment to rehearsals, performances, and program expectations.

  • Complete an application process, including parent/caregiver support and endorsement.


Students in the Music Academy will represent SCSHS by attending the following events and competitions:

  • Ipswich Music Eisteddfod (May at Ipswich Civic Centre) (https://www.ipswichjunioreisteddfod.com/music) (Term 2)

  • QUOTA Music groups- end of July Logan Entertainment Centre (https://www.quotabeenleigheisteddfod.org/music-groups) (Term 3)

  • Gold Coast Eisteddfod (July through to August)- Bands, Choral, Piano, Small ensembles and Rock Bands. (https://www.goldcoasteisteddfod.com.au/dates/) (Term 3)

  • End of Term 1 Music Concert (Term 1, Week 10).

  • End of Semester 1 Music Concert (Term 2, Week 10).

  • End of Year Music Showcase (Term 4, Week 4).

  • Music Band Camps (on a weekend at SCSHS; one per each term; when needed).


Participants in the Music Academy are required to pay or purchase the following:

  • Instrument hire or maintenance costs (where applicable most student would use their own instrument).

  • Sheet music, accessories, or required equipment.

  • Excursion, workshop, competition, or Band Camp costs.

  • Transport costs associated with performances or events

To apply for the Music Academy

Applications will only be accepted via this online form. 

To apply for the Music Academy students will be required to answer 2 questions and upload a composed musical piece.

  • Musical piece to be 1-3 minutes long

  • MP4 format only


All new applications for students who do not currently attend SCSHS will need to complete an Expression of Interest form from our website aswell and the Academy application.
